Saudi Arabia executes six people in one day

Geneva, 13 July 2017 – Saudi Arabia executed six people on Monday in what is believed to be the highest number of executions in a single day since the start of the year. The total number of executions for 2017 is now up to 44, claims the government.

The kingdom is renowned for one of the highest execution rates in the world. In 2015, Saudi Arabia executed at least 1,634 people, the highest recorded since 1989.  In 2017, at least 41% of those executed were killed for non-violent acts, such as participating in peaceful protests.

Saudi Arabia is currently one of the worst countries in terms of human rights. The kingdom lacks of an impartial and transparent judiciary system as death sentences are handed down on unfounded crimes. In May 2017 – following a visit from US President Donald Trump – a Saudi criminal court upheld several death sentences handed down to protesters, including disabled man Munir Adam.

Saudi Arabia is using the death penalty as a weapon to silence protesters and human rights defenders, who want to have their voices heard on the deteriorating human rights situation. Amnesty International has documented 34 cases of Shia men currently sentenced to death following unfair trials based on confessions obtained by torture.

The regions of Awamiyah and Qatif have been scenes of peaceful demonstrations since February 2011. The Shia minority has been complaining of marginalisation in the Sunni-ruled kingdom, demanding reforms, freedom of expression, the release of political prisoners and an end to economic and religious discrimination.

ICSFT is deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in the kingdom. Saudi Arabia is failing to comply with recommendations in favour of the protection of human rights such as freedom of expression, assembly and religion, as well as the abolition of the death penalty and prohibition of torture and other cruel punishments. ICSFT strongly condemns the use of death penalty in Saudi Arabia and urges the country to implement a moratorium on executions and establish a transparent and impartial judiciary system. ICSFT calls on the international community and all relevant stakeholders to stop Saudi Arabia’s persecution of Shia minorities.
