Rohani wins Iran presidential election

President Hassan Rohani has been largely re-elected, the Iranians clearly showed their support for his policy of openness. He also reinforced his position with the Conservatives.

Rohani won by 57% against his rival Ebrahim Raissi, who was supported by the clergy and some allies in the security forces. This result created a popular festival in the streets of Tehran.

Hassan Rohani has been congratulated by his main allies, Validimir Poutine and Bashar Al-Assad, but also by the EU by the head of its diplomacy Federica Mogherini.

Vladimir Putin congratulated Rohani on his re-election and confirmed his determination to continue to develop Russian-Iranian partnerships. The Russian president also wished the economic agreements concluded during Hassan Rohani's visit in Russia in March be successfully implemented. The two countries have great relations in various fields like energy and industry.

Bashar Al-Assad, also congratulated Hassan Rohani after his victory, almost in the same terms as Vladimir Putin, explaining the need to strengthen the security and stability of the region. It is not a surprising reaction because the Syrian government regained the advantage over the jihadists thanks to the military support of Iran and Hezbollah in addition to Russia.

The EU is satisfied with the election since it participated in the negotiations with Tehran for the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, but the suspension of the European and American sanctions that paralyzed the Iranian economy has not produced the expected effects.

On the other hand, Washington asked Tehran to destroy its terrorism’s network and to end ballistic missile tests according to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at a press conference in Riyadh. However, it seems that the U.S. is forgetting about their networks with terrorists groups such as ISIS and Saudi wahhabis, whom they constantly support through their crimes and atrocities. Moreover, the U.S. has no right to urge Iran to put an end to their ballistic missile tests following agreement with P5 + 1.

It is no coincidence that President Donald Trump is visiting Saudi Arabia, a long-time enemy of Iran, and with whom Washington has signed a number of important agreements, to support the "long-term security" of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region "in the face of Iranian threats," according to the US head of state.

ICSFT congratulates Hassan Rohani for its victory; it is a choice of progress and openness to the world. We hope that Iran will contribute to the stability of the region, respect and promote human rights in the Muslim world and act for the democratic development of the Middle East. However, we are strongly opposed to the arms sales to non-democratic states and to the testing of dangerous weapons.
