Mohammad Ramadan and Hussein Moosa
Following the execution of three Shia men the Bahraini Government is preparing to execute two more citizens, Mohammad Ramadan and Hussein Moosa, whose death sentences was confirmed in late 2015. As per the usual the two men were tortured while in prison, coerced to confess their crime, and not allowed to have proper legal assistance which is in contravention of international standards.
The United Nations Special Rapporteurs on Torture, Nils Melzer, and on summary executions, Agnes Callamard, said “Under international law, there is an absolute prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
They further highlighted “The Bahraini authorities have the duty to investigate all allegations of human rights violations committed during the proceedings, including torture by security forces during interrogations.”
The experts also stated that according to the allegations they have received from the ground all of these death sentences are being imposed following partial and unfair trials. Including coercion to confess under torture by using methods such as electric shocks and sexual humiliation.
The Special Rapporteurs emphasized that capital punishment may be imposed only following a trial that complied with the most stringent guarantees of fair trial and due process and any death sentence executed after a trial failing to meet these standards is tantamount to an arbitrary execution.
ICSFT fully support the appeal made by The United Nations Special Rapporteurs on Torture and summary executions, and urge the international community, in particular the UN, to Stop Bahrain executing its political opponents and human rights activists.
