Kuwait: The Constitutional Court annuls the membership of Parliamentarian Dr. Bader Al-Dahoom
The International Council Supporting Fair Trial and Human Rights, and through its follow-up of the appeals submitted to the membership of the opposition representative, Badr Al-Dhahoom, is surprised today by the issuance of a ruling by the Constitutional Court, relying on a law issued in 2016 and its application to the Dahoom MP, whose election in 2020 was legitimate. “The Law of Deprivation of the Offender" was applied retroactively on him. This will make us and international organizations follow up on this matter with the Human Rights Council, the special rapporteurs and the International Parliament Union, in violation of international covenants and covenants signed by the State of Kuwait and the Kuwaiti constitution.
ICSFT is concerned about these illegal provisions and calls on the State of Kuwait to abide by its international obligations and not to politicize the parliament and impede its work for personal purposes. We also recall the need to amend and repeal all laws that contravene international legitimacy, and to recognize that freedom of expression is a right that cannot be restricted by strict laws.
