10 Million Citizen Starving by End of 2018 if US-Saudi Aggression Continues

The world’s worst ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen is likely to get even worse before it gets better, according to a recent statement from the United Nations. About 8.4 million of Yemen’s nearly 28 million residents are “severely food insecure and at risk of starvation.” According to a May 24 statement from the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Mark Lowcock, "the number could jump by another 10 million by the end of 2018 “if conditions do not improve.”

Before the latest US-Saudi Aggression escalation, Hodeidah’s population was about 600,000, but Lowcock said it was unclear how many were still in the heavily bombed port city. UN agencies recently delivered food aid for 42,000 families in danger, which Lowcock estimated represented about a quarter of a million people.

The main cause of the widespread hunger in Yemen is the US-Saudi aggression blockade of the country’s biggest port in the city of Hodeidah, according to the UN statement. Around 90% of Yemen’s food supply is imported, and 70-80% of Yemen's imports pass through Hodeidah, so the port’s functionality is crucial to the abundance and affordability of food in the country.

The UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, warned that "critical actions need to be taken now" to avoid a full-blown famine. Martin Griffiths told France 24 that without exaggeration, Yemen faces a terrible humanitarian situation. "It's no surprise to say that the human situation of Yemen is the worst humanitarian situation in the world. A large part of the Yemeni people relies on the United Nations assistance and other international institutions to provide food and other goods," he said   

The Associated Press agency published a report under the title, "Bin Salman's Ambitions Forced the Yemenis to Eat Foliage to Survive." It described the humanitarian situation in northern Yemen as catastrophic, where many of the families with hungry children have nothing to eat except local foliage boiled until it becomes a green acid paste.
